Thesis (M.A.)--Queen's University at Kingston (Canada), 2003.
José Martí (1853–1895) was a philosopher, poet, and political leader who spent his life promoting values of national solidarity for his homeland of Cuba and the rest of Latin America. Today, under the regime of Fidel Castro, Martí is venerated as the national hero of Revolutionary Cuba. He is also revered, however, as the spiritual guardian of the Florida-based opposition to Castro of Cuban exiles. As an eidolon, a figure embodying public memory, Martí's transcendent identity arises from how various social groups have regarded him in time and in place.

One hundred and fifty years after his birth, at a time of mounting uncertainty as to Cuba's post-Castro fate, this thesis examines how Cubans project Martí on to their cultural and political landscape as a means of communicating nationalist discourses. Today, as throughout the past century, the metanarrative expressed through Martí resonates primarily from the use of didactic mnemonic devices used to construct moral rallying points and defence mechanisms for the Cuban nation.

Martí did not always command this defining role in forging Cuban nationhood. After his death in 1895, the dead-body-politic of reconstructing his identity brought him into national prominence. This thesis explores geographies of nationalism and memory in order to reveal the processes whereby Martí became the embodiment of an imagined community.
