Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Toronto (Canada), 2003.
In the rhythm of the heartbeat, in the subtle vibratory structure of the cells and in the intricacies inherent in its flow of energy and consciousness, the body is found to be entirely resonant. Combining knowledge from both new physics and Eastern somatic traditions, the energy dimensions of the body are found to be immersed and participant in the resonance of the whole universe. Yet the articulation of the lived-experience of the body in Western cultures has usually been overtly avoided. If addressed at all, the interior experience has been the purview of the arts and of mystical religious traditions. In this work, several sources of somatic lived-experience will be drawn upon: aesthetic expressions, physiology, Eastern somatic traditions, new physics, depth psychology. By reference to a variety of somatic knowledges, the body's complex interior presentation and its capacity for deep engagement with the world is addressed. Despite the severance of Western cultures from the language and significance of subjective experience, similarities can be recognized across cultures in the shared experience of embodiment.

A review of resonance will be undertaken seeking to understand this concept in its overt physical forms such as sound, and in its subtle, less discernible forms, such as pertain to the inquiry of new physics. The body will be seen to be immersed in a breadth of resonance which permits its reception of and interaction with the world. Following a consideration of resonance, the difficulties and process of a phenomenological ‘doing’ are illustrated in a transitional chapter prior to undertaking an exploratory phenomenological articulation of three embodied experiences of resonance. Beginning with an aesthetic experience, and followed by an exploration of a single word and finally a dream and cultural image, an attempt will be made to convey in language the mixed, pre-lingual and pre-reflective experience of the body's resonance. In imitation of the body's manner of reception, the voice of this undertaking cannot be unitary, but rather, the analytical is accompanied by the expressive and the tentative to disclose the resonant body as subsymbolic, directional, tolerant of paradox and multi-valent.
