This study is an inquiry into the Fourth Gospel's calendric system. John presents a series of weeks in his Gospel that serve as interpretive pathways to the beginning and ending of Jesus' ministry. The series of days within John 1–2 inaugurates Jesus' ministry, while 12:1–19:42 forms a week that leads to his crucifixion. A third week follows in 20:1–20:26 where Jesus returns to his disciples, notably Thomas. This study examines these weeks as “thematic,” though it regards them as accurate chronological accounts. Its overall purpose is to distinguish the individual characteristics of each week and discern how all three weeks function as a thematic unit in the Gospel's structure and message.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The exploratory hypothesis of the study is that John follows a lunar-based passion week and presents Jesus as crucified upon the Passover, a 14 Nisan crucifixion. Such an accounting presents Jesus as the consecrated “the Lamb of God,” anointed in the house at Bethany on 10 Nisan and then crucified on 14 Nisan. When the study compares this sequence with the exodus narrative of Exod 12:3, it discovers that Jesus' “hour,” as well as his last sequence of days, encompasses the same calendar period of the paschal lamb's separation (10–14 Abib/Nisan).

The study investigates what it terms as “John's calendric shift” and concludes by exploring the period between John 20:19–26 as John's “eschatological week.” This enduring octad begins and ends upon a Sunday. Therefore, the last day is also the first day of the new and perpetual cycle. In this way, the “eschatological week” is schematic and inclusive, likened to a jubilees calendar, yet it is a perpetual week in a New-temple calendar of light.

The study reviews John's three thematic weeks with their individual traits. His “first week” is a seven-day period that begins upon a Sunday that reflects the “third day” at Sinai where Moses received the Torah. His “last week” is also a seven-day period that recasts the Synoptic passion chronology into the lunar-Temple calendar of the Passover. His “eschatological week” is perpetual in nature, and it reorders the days through a calendric shift from a lunar to a solar calendar. All three thematic weeks begin on a Sunday. The study demonstrates how the three thematic weeks function as a unit to present Jesus as the Messiah to all of Judaism.
