The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the relationship among Paul, Simon Magus, and Marcion. Simon was called “the root of all heretics” by Irenaeus. The Tübingen school led by F. C. Baur viewed Simon in the Pseudo-Clementines as Paul in disguise. Marcion was another figure who was closely linked to Paul. A. Harnack regarded him an ardent student of Paul. In a recent study H. Detering argues that Simon was no other than Paul himself and further suggests that Marcion was thus a disciple of “Paul Simon.”Subjects--Topical Terms:

Chapter 2 investigates Simon using the testimonies of the canonical Acts, the heresiologists, the Pseudo-Clementines, the various apocryphal Acts, and of Josephus. It examines whether the various Gnostic systems in the second century were really originated from Simon. For this purpose, Simonian Gnosticism is compared with Saturnilianism, Valentinianism, and others.

Chapter 3 reviews Marcion using the witnesses of the church fathers and the studies of modern scholars. It discusses whether Marcion's ditheism was from the Pauline epistles and the Gospel of Luke or from Cerdo's Syrian Gnosticism and/or from Empedocles. The possibility of Marcion's contact with Saturninus or his disciples in Antioch is also discussed, as Marcion's docetism and asceticism were very similar to those of Saturninus.

Chapter 4 investigates the relationship among Simon, Marcion, and Paul. The Kerygmata Petrou were a product of anti-Paulinism in the middle of the second century and was employed by the Pseudo-Clementines. The (Ebionite) Pseudo-Clementines attacked Paul under the name of Simon. This chapter discusses whether Simon was really Paul or the name “Simon” was occasionally used in disguise to attack Paul. It also examines the various apocryphal Acts to review the testimonies of the other party. For them, Simon was an enemy of Paul (as well as of Peter). Regarding the relationship between Simon and Marcion, it discusses whether or not Marcion was a disciple of Simon (or of “Paul Simon” if Simon was Paul) via Cerdo. It also examines whether Simonianism influenced Marcionism or was influenced by Marcionism.
