The introduction discusses the need for a comparative/contextual analysis of Hebrew conquest accounts. This dissertation relies on William Hallo's contextual analysis of biblical material via the surrounding cultures of the Ancient Near East. Narratological analysis is introduced and defined for the purpose of this dissertation. Elements such as character, plot, time and space are illustrated using both Assyrian and Hebrew narrative. Critical methodology for this dissertation is defined and illustrated.

Chapter 1 analyzes Assyrian conquest accounts utilizing a diachronic process. Assyrian royal inscriptions from the thirteenth to the eighth centuries B.C.E. are examined using narratological analysis. In addition to narratological analysis this chapter also employs a type of discourse analysis. Syntagmatic analysis, a sub-component of discourse analysis has been employed for some time by Italians examining royal inscriptions of Assurnasirpal II. In principal the work of E. Badali et.al. is followed in the syntagmatic analysis of Assyrian royal inscription.

Chapter 2 focuses on divergent nature of the conquest as presented by the biblical books of Joshua and Judges. The biblical material is divided along source critical lines utilizing deuteronomic sigla. Narratological and syntagmatic analysis is presented concerning both conquest accounts.

The following conclusions emerged from this study: (1) The process of recording military conquest in Assyria emerged over a lengthy period of time. Inscriptional advancements are noticeable through narratological analysis of these royal narratives. (2) Hebrew scribes influenced by Assyria during the 7<super>th</super> and 6<super>th</super> centuries employed similar techniques for their military historiography. (3) Theology/ideology were the deciding factors on whether Israel's military historiography was presented positively or negatively.
