Thesis (Ph.D.)--Emory University, 2003.
Two major approaches have been used to study magic in the ancient world. Essentialist approaches have attempted to determine the nature of magic and relate it to science and religion. Functionalist approaches have attempted to determine how magic and accusations of magic function within a society. This study uses both approaches to study women magic users and their portrayal in the Hebrew Bible. Through a rhetorical analysis of ten texts it is argued that there are several different understandings and treatments of magic in the Hebrew Bible, and that neither essentialist nor functionalist approaches are entirely sufficient to understand the portrayal of women magic users in the Hebrew Bible. It is argued that women's magic is normally associated with the family and its needs and necromancy. Women's magic may be co-opted into serving Yahwistic purposes or simply denounced. In three texts magic, women and harlotry are all inter-related. It is argued that in these three texts magic works primarily as a metaphor for social, economic, and political power. By labeling this power as magic, it is cast as harmful and illegitimate.Subjects--Topical Terms:
