Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2003.
The purpose of this study was to look at the career behavior of 75 professional Latinas in ministry by examining the relationship of contextual factors and background variables with career self-efficacy. Study variables (background and contextual variables) included the following: career self-efficacy, ethnic identity, feminist attitude, ministerial status, and seminary education. Additional demographic variables included: age, place of birth, ethnic label, marital status, denominational affiliation, ministerial position, ethnicity of congregation, church SES, language use, theological position, and intention of leaving ministry. Participants completed the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM), scoring a 3.39 mean item response (SD = .4207), and the Career Task Survey - Ministerial, modified to address the ministerial and church work environment of Latinas in ministry, with a mean of M = 7.68 (SD = .7509). Participants also completed the Feminist Perspective Scale (FPS). Correlational analysis was conducted to assess the relationships between career self-efficacy, ethnic identity, feminist attitude, ministerial status, and seminary education. A linear multiple regression analysis was performed to determine the predictive power of ethnic identity, feminist attitude, seminary education, and ministerial status on career self-efficacy. Results of the regression equation were significant in predicting career self-efficacy for the overall model (p = .011). A respectful variance of 27.6% was accounted for by the independent variables, ethnic identity (p = .004) and conservative feminist attitude (p = .017) indicating that participants with strong ethnic identity and traditional values concerning gender relations will have higher levels of career self-efficacy. Supplementary correlational analyses were also conducted, including a within group analysis of Latina participants categorized by denominational affiliation.
