The soil-foundation-structure interaction on a wedge-shaped medium is studied. The soil-foundation-structure interaction on a wedge-shaped medium is studied. The analysis is separated into different sub-problems, namely, the study of the free field wave in a wedge shaped elastic and homogeneous medium with arbitrary shaped surface topography at the vertex, the study of the arbitrary shaped rigid foundation and soil-structure interaction.

The free-field waves in a wedge shaped medium with arbitrary shaped surface topography is further subdivided into the study of the circular canyon and using the moment residual method extending the solution to encompass the arbitrary shaped canyon. The geometry of the media ranges from a flat elastic half-space to a quarter space. The wave displacement fields are computed by the residual method for the cases of the rounded-rectangular shape, the elliptic shape and the flat-elliptic shape. The results help explain the geophysical observations regarding the amplification of seismic energy as a function of site conditions.

The arbitrary shaped rigid foundation study is also subdivided into the study of the circular shaped foundation and extending to the study of the arbitrary shaped foundation. The solution of the of a semi-circular rigid foundation at the vertex of an elastic wedge-shaped medium provides an analytic closed-form solution in terms of cylindrical wave functions for the incident SH waves. The closed form solution provides a set of results that can be used as companions with approximate solutions.

The study of the effect of the wave propagation on the superstructure follows, i.e. the evaluation of the driving forces induced by the train of seismic waves on the rigid foundation.

The dynamic response of the structure is studied due to the input of forcing functions generated by the seismic waves. The superstructure is a homogeneous shear wall. The effect of the shape of the foundation on the response is studied next. Lastly, the relative response is studied and the effect of the effects of foundation shape and the frequency of the incoming waves are analyzed.
