This study investigated the effects of two sessions of therapy on clients from an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and also evaluated the influence of selected client and clinical characteristics on the treatment outcome as measured by the outcome measurement questionnaire, OQ-45.2. The OQ-45.2 was given as a pretest prior to treatment, and as a posttest just prior to the third session of treatment. There was about 2 1/2 weeks between the pretest and the posttest.

The sample consisted of 917 clients who were provided two sessions of an eclectic brief therapy. The sample was divided into two groups based on the clients' OQ-45.2 pretest scores. Clients who scored less than 63 of a possible score of 180 were considered in the functional range. Clients who scored 63 or above were considered in the dysfunctional range. There were 292 clients who scored in the functional range, and 625 in the dysfunctional range. Based on the differences between the pretest, and the posttest, of the 292 clients who were functional, 33 (11.3%) became worse, 219 (75%) stayed the same, and 40 (13.7%) improved. Of those who were considered dysfunctional, 35 (5.6%) became worse, 283 (45.3%) stayed the same, and 307 (49.1%) improved or recovered.

Analyses of covariance and logistic regression techniques were used to assess the influence of client and clinical characteristics on treatment outcome. Only the variable age was found to have an influence on the changes from the pretest to the posttest. Three variables, gender, problem area, and state were found to contribute to the likelihood that a client would be in the functional or dysfunctional group. Two variables, age and problem/diagnosis, were found to contribute to the likelihood that a client would be improved or not improved.

With regard to the treatment outcome, there was significant client change from the pretest to the posttest. Significance applied across all of the variables. The findings of this study have implications for social work policy, practice, education and research. Among these is the need to evaluate the long-term effects of short-term treatment and to teach effective outcome measurement.
