This study investigated the effects of a pet therapy dog on self-reported mood states of men who are HIV-positive or diagnosed with AIDS. Forty-nine men who reported as HIV-positive and who were comfortable with dogs participated in the study.

Participants were randomly assigned to one of two treatment conditions: a 15-minute interaction with a visitor and a dog, or a 15-minute interaction with a visitor with books about dogs. Participants were administered the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List-Revised (MAACL) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-Form Y as pre and post measures. Each participant received one visit and was administered the two measures before and after the 15 minute interaction. The MAACL included two different forms: Part one and Part two.

In both conditions, pet-handlers were provided with a script to follow and they were encouraged to keep conversations about dogs. Pet-handlers completed an observational checklist by recording the frequency of seven behaviors, listing “I” statements, and circling emotions observed during the interaction (which were pulled from the MAACL) on an emotional checklist.

None of the analyses of the five hypotheses revealed significant findings. However, results revealed that dysphoria and anxiety decreased significantly across time for both groups, dog-present and dog-absent. In addition, supplemental analyses detected that pet-handlers reported significantly fewer negative emotions for those participants who were pet-owners.

Implications for future studies included a need for a control condition that did not include visitations with or discussions about dogs. A series of pet visitations across time might result in significant differences in mood states. Participants were ambulatory HIV-positive or AIDS patients. Future studies might include in-home visitations for those in the later stages of the AIDS process. Finally, pet-ownership might be an important factor influencing effectiveness of PET.
