The present study examines the effects of cumulative life experience on optimistic bias and unrealistic optimism. Early studies suggest that young people report that they are more likely than others to have positive events happen to them and that they are less likely to experience negative events. In this study, we are interested in investigating age differences in optimistic bias and unrealistic optimism. Participants were asked to fill out 2 questionnaires, rating how likely it is an event will happen to them or others and how controllable they perceive that event to be. We hypothesized that compared to older people, younger people will underestimate the likelihood that they will experience negative events compared to others (optimistic bias) and overestimate the controllability of negative events (unrealistic optimism). We further hypothesized that because older people have more direct experience with negative life events, that they will have lower optimistic bias and lower levels of unrealistic optimism compared to younger people.
