Thesis (M.S.)--State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, 1998.
According to Stuart Hall's (1980) notion of preferred readings, (popular) films encourage their viewers to decode them in accordance with the values of the dominant culture. However, Jurassic Park has been said to offer stinging critiques of science and technology and thus present a significant challenge to the status quo. This study addresses whether Jurassic Park's illustration of the natural environment promotes or discredits an antagonistic view of the natural world and concludes that, despite its inconsistencies and internal contradictions which open the film to polysemic interpretations, Jurassic Park ultimately reinforces an antagonistic and utilitarian view of the natural environment.
