Thesis (M.A.)--Trent University (Canada), 2003.
This thesis primarily argues the following claims: that Hans Blumenberg's historical analysis of Western metaphysics is essentially correct though the Gnostic content of Platonism is greater than the historian cares to develop in his Legitimacy of the Modern Age; that, in the same book, Blumenberg fails to fully concede the persuasive nature of human suffering; that Christianity, like virtually all late antique religions, was fundamentally Gnostic, its latent Gnostic content exacerbated by the highly influential reading of Saint Augustine following Pauline theology. In addition to the development of early Christianity, Augustine's socio-historical situation is examined in order to ground conjecture as to his theological/anthropological motivations. The metaphoric deployment of slavery in early Christian rhetoric is also examined so as to substantiate assertions with regard to the agressivity of Christian worldly repudiation.
