The ongoing debate in the literature concerning the defining components of resilience and the underlying process behind its manifestation supported the need for a concept synthesis of this body of literature, the development of a parsimonious model of resilience based on the synthesis, and the development of an empirical instrument to measure resilience. Through concept synthesis, a nursing model of resilience was proposed explaining resilience as the synergistic interaction among dispositional, relational, situational, and philosophical patterns. The next phase of concept synthesis was to verify the concept empirically. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop and validate an instrument that operationalized the conceptualization of resilience as an integration of the four patterns. The major steps of tool development included in this study were item development, content validation, preliminary item testing, and field testing of the instrument. Data for the study were collected in three phases over one year. An initial pool of 112 items was reviewed by four national experts, and 46 items were retained to become the initial form of the Polk Resilience Patterns Scale (PRPS). This form of the PRPS was piloted by a group of 232 participants. Item analysis reduced the item pool to 20 total items, 5 for each pattern. A subsequent field study of the 20 item PRPS had 153 participants. Subjects completed the PRPS, the Personal Resilience™ Questionnaire (PRQ), the Orientation to Life Questionnaire (OLQ), the Psychological Hardiness Scale (PHS), the Learned Helplessness Scale (LHS), the Nowotny Hope Scale (NHS), and a personal profile form. Cronbach's alpha reliability was .90 for the PRPS and significant correlations were found between the PRPS and the PRQ, OLQ, PHS, LHS, and NHS, providing support for convergent, concurrent, and discriminant validity. Principal axis factor analysis used to examine the structure of the PRPS yielded an unforced four factor solution that corresponded with the four patterns of resilience. These results support the conclusions that the PRPS is a valid and reliable measure of resilience, and that there is initial support for a nursing model of resilience as an integration of dipositional, relational, philosophical, and situational patterns.
