External and internal feedback are the typical mechanisms used by singers to regulate the pitch of their voice. The present study was designed to investigate the abilities of persons with natural singing voices to match pitch utilizing different forms of feedback, compared to trained singers and persons with non-natural singing voices. The goal of the study was to determine if pitch-matching abilities are affected differently in these three groups before feedback can have an effect on the voice (pre-phonatory set), when external and internal feedback are available, and when only internal feedback is available. Results suggest that singers with training and those with a natural singing ability have similar abilities when matching pitch and these abilities are significantly better than those singers without natural singing abilities. This study also found that all subjects had the most accurate pitch matching during the external as well as the internal feedback conditions.
