African-American females are plagued by higher rates of teenage pregnancy than any other group. Female teenage mothers are often faced with tremendous barriers in their attempt to complete their education and enter into the workforce. The major focus in literature has been on statistics of poverty, crime, unemployment, and human despair. This study examines whether or not women who become pregnant and had children as teenagers managed to become successful adults, and if they resolved the economic, social, and educational problems they faced at the time. It also attempts to determine the characteristics of individuals who succeed in resolving these issues despite an early teen pregnancy.

A survey was conducted using descriptive statistics, quantitative method, based on a questionnaire made up of items to cover the above issues. Interviews and questionnaires were summarized and the experiences were compared for consistencies. There were twenty subjects obtained from several community agencies, churches, and schools. The subjects were women, ages 20–50 who had recently or would have had children during their teenage years. Study participants were mostly African-American with the exception of a small number of Hispanic and Haitian minorities. Each participant completed a questionnaire while discussing items 7–37 in detail with the interviewer.

Statistical assessments suggested participants tended to continue their education, showed strong tendency toward marriage, considered themselves to be religious, did not use drugs, and expressed conservative views of the world around them. The chief limitation of this study was its sample size. It was recommended that a quasi-experimental design be used in future attempts at studying this group to expand on the descriptive characteristics of this population. Further study would help to capture the successes of these mothers, have the findings applied as sources of policy changes, new structures, training, education and/or other interventions in addressing the population.
