This research study investigates qualitatively the intersection of racism and sexism in the experiences of Asian American professional women in their careers. While Asian American women, like other women of color, exist in unique ways at the intersection of racial and gender oppression in the United States, their actual experiences at that political location have suffered a dearth of empirical investigation in the social science literature. This study is one attempt to mitigate that dearth, and concomitantly strives to expand the parameters of social justice discourse, inquiry, and analysis.

Nine Asian American women were recruited to participate in this research project. All women lived and worked in the Boston metropolitan area, and represented a range of diverse professions. The principal researcher conducted one approximately two-hour long, semi-structured interview with each participant, with one brief phone follow-up for the purpose of clarification of the initial interview. The general principles dictated by Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) were utilized as central guidelines in the analysis of data. The results of that analysis suggest that racism and sexism indeed act as intersecting forces in the careers and workplace experiences of the participants in multiple ways. For example, participants typically reported being one of few Asian women in their workplaces and overall fields, resulting in professional isolation, lack of mentorship, and few role models. Most described having to negotiate and confront in their careers the many negative, and even supposedly “positive,” stereotypes of Asian American women, stereotypes that for some contributed to denial of deserved promotions and jobs. In addition to concrete evidence of racism and sexism, the analysis uncovered several ways in which those intersecting systems of oppression impacted participants intra-individually, and were consequential in their interpersonal interactions in the workplace. Glass-ceilings contingent upon race and gender status, as well as limitations in career choice and opportunity, were commonly reported. Importantly, this study examined how contextual factors, such as lack of inclusive race and gender discourses, apparently mediate the experience and perception of racism and sexism among participants. Limitations and implications of the study are discussed, as are recommendations for further research.
