Flow state is an experiential state that has been documented to occur in athletes and performing artists. Flow state has been reported by individuals of many cultures, and across boundaries of age and gender. This study of equestrian athletes in the sport of dressage examines the relationship between reported flow state, individual goal orientation, and changes in reported flow state, which might occur after exposure to subjective evaluation by a dressage judge during competition. In the sport of dressage, there is often a one to two hour time lapse between a rider's performance and the posting of the final score and placement in competition. This time gap allowed the researcher to obtain a flow state measure after the rider's performance, but before the rider had knowledge of their competitive outcome. Subjects (n = 88) were selected at dressage competitions throughout Nevada and California. Subjects initially completed the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (Duda & Nicholls, 1992). This measurement instrument provided a measure of goal orientation. The riders then performed in competition. Immediately after their performance, each rider completed a Flow State Scale-2 (Jackson, 2001). Forty of the 88 subjects were used as a control group. These riders waited for two hours after their performance and then completed a second Flow State Scale-2, before receiving any knowledge of their final score or placement in competition. The 44 subjects in the experimental group completed their second FSS-2 after receiving the judge's score and their final placement in competition. Difference scores were calculated between the first and second flow state measures to see if flow state changed significantly after receiving a judge's evaluation. Results were evaluated The Relative Effects using the Spearman Rho correlation coefficient, the Mann Whitney U test, and the Kruskall-Wallis. Results found no significant relationship between goal orientation and flow state. Flow state did change significantly in the experimental group when their competitive outcome was better than their expectations. These significant changes included changes in Total Flow State (p < .01), as well as the subscales of Merging of Action and Awareness (p = .01), Clear Goals (p < .01), and Autotelic Experience ( p < .05). In all cases of significant changes, these measures showed increases. These results indicate that flow state may be significantly influenced by unexpected positive feedback. The subjects in this study showed a strong task goal orientation, and a relatively low ego goal orientation. Results may be different for a sample with a stronger ego goal orientation.Subjects--Topical Terms:
