The success of attaining academic respectability in physical education depends greatly upon the leadership of the departmental chairperson. This study was conducted to examine the relationships among leadership attributes and behaviors of physical education department chairpersons and their effect on departmental productivity, leadership effectiveness and faculty satisfaction. Four hundred and seventy-three graduate faculty members were surveyed in 38 departments offering the doctoral degree in physical education. Each faculty member completed the Leadership Attribute Questionnaire (LAQ), the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ), and Graduate Faculty Information Form (GFIF). Departmental productivity was calculated from publications in 17 national and international journals. Two hundred eighteen faculty (46%) returned usable information. Factor analyses of leadership attributes and behaviors revealed three factor structures (Personal and Social Characteristics; Intelligence and Ethical Characteristics; and Managerial and Administrative Skills) from the 35 leadership attributes on the LAQ, and six factor structures (Charisma/Inspiration; Intellectual Stimulation/ Individual Consideration; Contingent Reward; Passive and Active Management by Exception; and Laissez-Faire) from the 40 leadership behaviors on the MLQ. Multiple regression analyses indicated that no significant relationships existed between departmental productivity and leadership attributes and behaviors. However, both leadership attributes and behaviors significantly predicted leadership effectiveness and faculty satisfaction. The three factors of leadership attributes also were found to be significantly related to five factors of leadership behaviors (Charisma/Inspiration; Intellectual Stimulation/Individual Consideration; Contingent Reward; Passive Management by Exception; Laissez-Faire). Transformational leadership failed to have an augmentation effect on departmental productivity beyond transactional leadership.Subjects--Topical Terms:
