This study examined the ways in which systematically varying art label information effected individuals' interpretation and recall of artwork images. A total of 350 undergraduate participants were randomly assigned in a 2 x 5 between-subjects study design (two paintings by five label conditions). (Picasso's “Weeping Woman”) or a figurative image (Velazquez's “Las Meninas”), and the painting images were accompanied by one of five label conditions. The label conditions (designated, insight into meaning, question, subject/artist, title and no title ) were designed to be progressively elaborated in nature (that is, the insight Into meaning label condition provided participants with the most fully developed conceptual framework for looking at and understanding the paintings, while the no title condition provided participants with no information in support of the paintings). The four dependent measures used to assess the effect of label information on cognitive processing were: (a) an interpretation essay measure, (b) an interpretation process measure that asked participants to rate how strongly they relied upon different information sources in arriving at their interpretation of the painting, (c) an evaluative judgment measure that asked participants to rate the painting along a 9-point semantic differential scale, and (d) a ten-question multiple-choice, recognition memory measure that asked participants to recall elements of the images.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Although the interpretation essay results strongly suggest that the painting images themselves had a greater influence on participants' interpretations of the paintings than the label condition information, a number of findings support a schema theory explanation of visual processing. Specifically, the results of the recognition memory measure and readability statistics suggested that label information from the insight into meaning and question label conditions activated conceptual schemas in participants, which, in turn, primed the participants to interpret and recall the paintings in the direction of the label information. As predicted, “Las Meninas” was rated as the more pleasant and patterned of the two paintings, but in accordance with Berlyne's (1971) psychobiological was rated as more interesting.
