The memorability of personal experiences with differential intensity and pleasantness or unpleasantness was utilized to examine the relationship between emotion and memory. Emotion and memory were investigated within a cognitive framework to demonstrate that emotion influences memory when the cognitive complexity of the memory is held constant. It was predicted that more intense experiences, independent of their pleasantness or unpleasantness would be recalled more frequently than neutral experiences, regardless of sex.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The design consisted of 65 noun-adjective phrases to which the subjects (41 female, 26 male University of Utah undergraduates) associated personal experiences. These personal experiences were then rated by the subjects for intensity and pleasantness or unpleasantness. After a short distraction task, subjects were asked to recall the personal experiences associated from the noun-adjective phrases.

Results indicated that intense personal experiences, whether pleasant or unpleasant, were recalled significantly better than neutral experiences; i.e., the emotional intensity of an experience clearly influenced its memorability. Pleasant and unpleasant experiences were recalled equally well. These results support the findings of investigators studying intensity, but not pleasantness. Other investigators found that pleasant experiences were recalled better than unpleasant ones. The discrepancy between the results of the present study and prior pleasantness research was attributed to methodological refinements which controlled for the decrease in intensity of unpleasant experiences over time. Sex differences were trivial. The results indicate the importance of emotion in the cognitive processing of complex material, i.e., memory.
