Influenced by the political, social, and economic conditions in China, young Chinese intellectuals were eager to explore the world when China reopened its door toward the end of the 1970s. Studying in America was perceived by the students as an opportunity for professional and personal advancement, a way to exit from an unpleasant environment, and a result of peer and social pressure.

Faced with language and other academically-related problems, Chinese students were overwhelmed by unexpected difficulties when first starting their studies in the U.S. The hardships resulted the plunge of self-confidence for many students. However, some time after an unexpected event, i.e. Critical Incident, helped the students to regain their confidence. In dealing with their academic problems, Chinese students utilized strategies such as reading, observing and trying, avoiding potential problems, capitalizing their advantages, and establishing personal relations with the faculty.

Chinese students' life in America was mainly in two human spheres, the academic sphere and the social sphere. In the latter, most Chinese students interact with other Chinese in their social groups, whose functions were to provide a means to learn about the new world and to support each other psychologically. The language, cultural, financial, and racial factors were identified as the reasons for the Chinese students to seek help from one another.

For most Chinese students, their American sojourn had in many ways challenged their traditional values, specifically with regard to intellectuals working as manual laborers and interpersonal relationships.
