One of the most fascinating aspects of Western Literature involves the trials and spectacles of the enchanted adventure. Tales of enchanted travels to unknown regions of the earth are perhaps one of most lasting and prevalent <italic>topoi</italic> in the Western Canon. Homer's <italic>Odyssey </italic> is, undoubtedly, the cornerstone of this tradition—the standard by which all enchanted tales can be judged.

520 $a The purpose of this study, however, is to investigate what happens when the journey goes wrong—when the promised adventure becomes decidedly disenchanted. Like stories of enchanted adventure, there is a long tradition of disenchanted journeys where the adventurer/hero, though he goes through the similar motions of the enchanted tale, is impeded from the basic tenants of the enchanted voyage. The hero is either denied the opportunity to start the promised adventure, denied the enlightenment of the typical hero, denied the ability to return home, or is (in extreme cases) so mentally devastated that, even at home, the remnants of the adventure are left to haunt the psyche.
520 $a To demonstrate the diverse range of disenchanted journeys I will look eight authors from different genres: Ovid, Swift, Verne, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Wells, Conrad, and Kafka. I will show how these authors defy enchantment in their respective stories/poems. I will conclude with Franz Werfel's <italic> Stern der Ungeborenen</italic> to show how even the disenchanted tale can still find its way back to a happy ending.
