520 $a This study begins by considering the precise nature of dolls' houses, attempting an exact definition of the form. It then explores aspects of the aesthetic appeal of dolls' houses and related miniatures in Western society. Formal categories of dolls' houses—as cabinets, as miniature buildings, and as single room settings—are explained. Distinctions between connoisseur's pieces and children's toys are addressed, as are modes of production and patronage ranging from ornate custom works for royalty to standardized models assembled in large numbers for middle-class consumers.
520 $a Following this conceptual and historic background, the dissertation examines some of the ways dolls' houses are connected to the people involved with them, specifically in terms of social and personal identity. Three case studies explore different aspects of these connections. The 1558 dolls' house of Albrecht V of Bavaria contained general references to his status as a sovereign duke, as well as to his specific state policies and individual tastes, manifesting attributes of both his public and private identities. A mid-nineteenth-century Philadelphia dolls' house originally belonging to the family of Edward H. Trotter incorporates a mediated elegance in its décor, reflecting their transition from Quaker simplicity to high society fashionability. As a novel and ingenious work of craftsmanship, it also demonstrates its maker Gottlieb Vollmer's identity as a highly skilled master artisan fully trained in the German guild tradition. Finally, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century toy kitchens are a class of dolls' houses meant to shape rather than reflect identity, as they were intended both to amuse little girls and to encourage them toward traditional adult gender-roles as housewives. Reconsidering historic dolls' houses thus allows us to examine the human condition through material culture in miniature.
