Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Arkansas, 2003.
The purpose of this study was to determine if differences between competitively employed, non-competitively employed, and unemployed blind adults exist on the variables of social problem-solving, self-efficacy, and community integration. It was hypothesized that social problem-solving, self-efficacy, and community integration would be higher for competitively employed blind adults as compared to those who are non-competitively employed or unemployed. It was hypothesized that as social problem-solving and self-efficacy increase, the level of community integration will increase. Lastly, the number of hours worked in competitive employment would be investigated to identify its relationship to the length of time receiving SSI and/or SSDI.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Statistically significant differences between competitively employed and unemployed blind adults were found on community integration and self-efficacy. The social problem-solving instrument appears to have some validity problems with this sample as the sample scored equally high on both the positive and negative problem orientation subscales and scored approximately one standard deviation above the population norms for this instrument. Regression analyses showed that self-efficacy was the primary factor in predicting community integration with this sample and these instruments. Correlational analysis showed a statistically significant and negative relationship between the length of time receiving SSI/SSDI and the average number of hours worked in competitive employment.
