This study draws on semiotic theory and material culture analysis to examine the ways in which juvenile justice uniforms subjectively and objectively create meaning for the girls who wear them and the staff who observe them. Forty-one incarcerated female youth and 14 teachers/staff members at a northern California, San Mateo County Youth Detention Facility were informally interviewed regarding their impressions concerning how the prescribed uniforms embody and communicate the cultural reality of the juvenile justice system. Responses revealed that girls and staff interpret and construct meaning based on a combination of the semiotics of fit, color and condition of both the uniform outerwear and underwear. Girls' responses revealed the significance of personal care products and physical grooming habits to their self identity and impression management. Through an examination of the girls' artwork, representational quotes, photographs and the author's personal reflections, the study unveils the ways in which a uniform that is worn 24 hours a day articulates with the girls' body to create a form that is the true site of semiotic meaning.Subjects--Topical Terms:
