Urban Black lesbian adolescents in the United States have the distinct and complex task of formulating a multilayered identity as members of three socially oppressed and stigmatized groups: Blacks, females and lesbians. Historically, social workers work with the most disenfranchised populations. Black lesbian adolescents are among these populations and are at high risk for sexually transmitted infections, affective disorders, substance abuse, suicide, physical, sexual and emotional abuse from peers, family and their communities of origin, and homelessness. This exploratory study explores the subjective experience of identity formation in self-identified Black lesbian adolescents aged 15 to 21. Using a qualitative research design, this study investigates how a small sample of female adolescents who are both Black and lesbian makes a conscious decision to personally and socially identify as being a member of these groups. Due to the lack of empirical and theoretical literature about this population, this study seeks to elaborate on the unique identity formation process of this population.Subjects--Topical Terms:
