The present work shows how the implementation of educational decentralization affected Mexican teachers politically, economically, pedagogically and professionally. It provides a critical interpretation of the politics of education in Mexico highlighting teachers' role in the consolidation and demise of the post-revolutionary regime. The study illustrates the factional dynamics that curtailed the fulfillment of qualitative educational reform objectives during the implementation of the <italic>Acuerdo Nacional para la Modernización de la Educación Básica y Normal</italic>.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The analysis focuses on the prominent role of the teachers' union in the State's corporatist machinery and on the influence of economic and political factors over the educational system's quality and development. The dissertation provides a detailed description of teachers' socio-economic, mobilization-militancy, political preferences and pedagogical-administrative characteristics in eight states of the Mexican republic: Campeche, Chiapas, Guerrero, Distrito Federal, Michoacán, Nayarit, Sinaloa and Tlaxcala.
