Thesis (D.M.A.)--Boston University, 2003.
The purpose of this dissertation is principally to describe the Intensive Community Program (ICP) in the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra (GBYSO) and to investigate the influence of the approaches of Orff, Kodály, and Suzuki on the Program. The ICP is a unique music program that provides a high quality of string education to minority and inner-city youth of Boston. The Program uses a combination of the Orff, Kodály, and Suzuki approaches to provide beginning string players with a multi-faceted approach to learning a wide range of fundamental techniques; note-reading and theory, ear training, musicianship, rhythm training, as well as instruction regarding the balanced posture and released muscles necessary for general ease and comfort while playing.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The ultimate goal of each approach mentioned above, including that of the ICP, is to enhance the lives of children by helping them develop musically to their fullest potential. The Program has been viewed as successful with beginning students who, in a short amount of time, have demonstrated both a high level of musicality and a solid understanding of the concepts of music reading and theory.

Using qualitative research methods, the author observed and documented the teaching in the Intensive Community Program, describing in the Chapter “ICP Sequence of Instruction,” the skills and activities taught. The following Chapter, “Analysis of Instruction” proceeds to give more detailed description and analysis of the instruction. It describes how and why specific elements are used in the Intensive Community Program and how the multi-faceted combination of different elements of the Orff, Kodály, and Suzuki approaches enables the students to attain certain goals more easily.

The ICP uses innovative ideas in order to teach young children the fundamentals required to be a successful musician. The Program can be used as a model for youth orchestras and school music programs, and elements can also be used by private music teachers. The dissertation explains the successful combination of elements of the approaches of Kodály, Orff, and Suzuki while keeping the art of making music exciting for young students.
