<excerpt><italic>How can architecture highlight the memory of Maple Leaf Gardens and prepare it for an adapted role in Canadian culture? </italic></excerpt>This thesis explores a proposal to revive Maple Leaf Gardens, the well-known and well-loved hockey arena in Toronto, Canada. The rink has been little used since it closed its doors to professional hockey in 1999. It currently lies gutted and vacant awaiting its fate.

520 $a Canada is a vast and young country, and by comparison with many nations, has few buildings that are recognized as worthy of preservation. Older buildings are costly to maintain and difficult to adapt to changing uses. This often leads to the wrecking ball being preferred over the drawing board. It is not uncommon in Canada to see a historical building leveled and a profitable condominium take its place. Because of this passive and careless attitude, some of the country's most precious buildings are being destroyed.
520 $a The goal of this thesis is to preserve Maple Leaf Gardens, adapt it to new uses and, in the process, respect its place in Canadian memory. The new program is a relocation of the Hockey Hall of Fame from its present location in BCE Place, and incorporate a practice facility for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The applied strategy of the design is to use architectural movements that allow the visitor to interact with the building in ways that they could not before.
