French artist René Lalique (b. 1860–1945) is regarded as the artist who best utilized the elements of the Art Nouveau movement, thus carrying an enduring impact upon not only Art Nouveau jewelry design, but upon ensuing jewelry design trends. The Art Nouveau period (1890–1915) embodied the curves of nature and the rectilinear geometry of balance and pattern as a unified, cohesive whole. This combination of characteristics manifested itself in myriad formats including jewelry design. This study will make use of primary and secondary sources to understand René Lalique and the production of art objects he created. Most importantly, this paper will examine the continuing—yet previously overlooked or underestimated—influence he exerts over current jewelry design. Results will be presented in chapters on the Art Nouveau period, Art Nouveau jewelry, jewelry designs of René Lalique, jewelry design by his contemporaries and subsequent artists, and Lalique's influence upon their works.Subjects--Topical Terms:
