Thesis (M.A.)--Carleton University (Canada), 2003.
The objective of this research was to determine the properties and characteristics related to web page visual appeal. In the first of three studies, 22 participants individually viewed 100 web pages for 500 ms in sequence and rated each page for visual appeal. Based on their responses, the 25 most and 25 least appealing web pages were selected for use in Study 2 with 31 participants. Reliability of judgments was very high. After making visual appeal ratings to the 50 web pages, participants rated each web page on seven visual characteristics. Five of the 7 rated characteristics were very highly correlated with visual appeal. In Study 3, web page design experts rated the 50 web pages from Study 2 on numerous properties related to color, layout, graphics, and fonts. Properties that correlated with visual appeal are discussed. During the process of this research, a technique for assessing web page visual appeal was developed.
