Thesis (M.Arch.)--Dalhousie University (Canada), 2001.
This thesis suggests that sustainable development is necessarily connected with an architectural understanding of the public realm. The area of study is a 40 year-old suburban development: Bridgeview in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is a conventional self-contained suburban development on the periphery of Halifax.

This thesis attempts to find potentials of social, tectonic, and ecological value which aim towards the prolonged existence of suburban Bridgeview and its Rockingham region. The design “urbanizes” the Bridgeview suburb by inserting a connective public green space, coupled with infill development of sustainable densities, which will help balance the decentralising and fragmented nature of current market-driven development. The proposal embraces mixed uses within a pedestrian-friendly green space; connects eight suburban districts to a public realm and the city as a whole; creates higher residential densities; and proposes a change in production to sustainable technologies. This thesis asks: Which architectural devices can be used to enrich public life, restructure mixed use and guide sustainable redevelopment for the Bridgeview suburban fabric of Halifax, Nova Scotia?
