This study presents the many distinct technical and cognitive capabilities that underpin and generate designers' activities. These capabilities are revealed through understanding design as a human capacity to envision how things ought to be and by devising artifacts to attain goals. Based on this definition, this study suggests that designers' mix of technical and cognitive capabilities can be embedded into business organizational practice, routines, and processes, creating unique competencies as a source of competitive advantage from which to develop business innovation.
