Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Delaware, 2002.
This dissertation is an examination of the embroidery production of Marguerite Thompson Zorach (1887–1968), one of a diverse group of avant-garde American artists working during the first part of the twentieth century. As an active member of the New York art community, Zorach was an important contributor to the development of modernism in America. Her established position as an Early American Modernist, however, has been based almost exclusively on her paintings and prints, but she also executed a series of large-scale embroideries, batiks, bedspreads, and rugs. Although recognized for their craftsmanship and highlighted as curiosities on the basis of the often perceived incongruity between modern and women's art, her embroideries have not been adequately examined for their subject matter or their relationship to early twentieth century art, the fiber arts, and women's art production. This dissertation evaluates Marguerite Zorach's embroideries from this larger, more comprehensive perspective.

Zorach's embroideries challenge the ways in which art production was categorized and valued during the early twentieth century. They document the strong interest in experimenting with crafts shared by both European and American artists of her time. However, Zorach's commitment to embroidery far exceeded that of many of her contemporaries. While many of her fellow artists dabbled in craft production early in their careers, Zorach remained committed to embroidery production throughout her life. She was dedicated to elevating embroidery to the level of fine art and to creating embroideries that reflected new trends in twentieth-century art.

Although the ultimate goal of Zorach and other self-proclaimed “modern embroiderers” who strove to elevate the status of needlework to the respectability of painting has been only recently realized, these embroiderers nonetheless deserve recognition for their role in challenging the limited ways in which embroidery was viewed within the fine arts tradition. The embroidery movement they established has an unwritten history that has yet to be thoroughly examined by art historians. This dissertation will document a segment of the history of this movement through an examination of the needlework created by Marguerite Zorach, one of its most successful, prolific, and gifted practitioners.
