Current literature indicates that leaders are an integral element of communities, organizations and governments, and that the lack of leadership continuity will most likely produce disruptions in an organization's ability to reach its goals. As a result of contemporary business practices, leadership turnover in organizations is rising and causing some to warn of an impending shortage of leaders. The laws of supply and demand suggest that paradoxical thinking about leaders as valuable and rare, while simultaneously thinking that leaders are disposable, could be the harbinger of a type of resource depletion resulting in a tragedy of commons the likes of which organizations have not heretofore experienced. The concept of continuity or sustaining wisdom and vision is essential to an organization and usually expressed through the leadership. If sustaining wisdom is vital for organizations, it follows then, that one might inquire about the sustainability of leaders themselves; those who are the purveyors of wisdom and vision. This study focused on determining the common qualities among sustainable leaders. The researcher defined sustainable leaders as: Sustainable leaders engage over an extended period of time in the process of influencing a group of individuals to achieve a common goal serving mutual purposes and values through a cooperative effort. </italic
