This paper offers empirical contributions to the cross-country comparison of the banking efficiencies by estimating various efficiency measures. In order to accomplish this goal, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and DEA based Stochastic Frontier methods are applied to the quarterly data from the 4<super> th</super> quarter of 1991 to the 4<super>th</super> quarter of 2001. The estimation results provide the overview of the movements of relative banking efficiencies across countries. This paper also offers a guideline of how banking efficiencies can be used in a structural VAR model in order to examine the relationship between the banking efficiency and economic growth. The results show that the relationship between the economic growth and the banking efficiency depends on the economic/financial structure of a country and should not be generalized without further specifications.Subjects--Topical Terms:
