Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Michigan, 2003.
The growing literature that addresses transnational relationships between African Americans and African/Caribbean peoples largely focuses on the intellectuals, artists and organizations from the Anglophone world and Spanish-speaking Caribbean. Modernizing the Race brings Haitian Kreyòl and French-speaking people into the discourse on transnationalism and Pan-Africanism. My thesis examines how Haitians and African Americans utilized the nature of Pan-Africanism, within a specific U.S. modernist project of Pan-Americanism, so that they may challenge U.S. hegemony and proceed to modernize themselves.Subjects--Topical Terms:

I argue that Pan-Africanism was appropriated as a tool of modernization, a means to black solidarity and also an anti-imperialist liberation ideology. However, taking into consideration U.S. efforts to halt the spread of communism and to ensure democracy and political and economic stability in the Caribbean and Latin America, African American and Haitian Pan-Africanisms were forced to negotiate the radical nature of Pan-Africanism within the international and national political landscape that existed during the inter-war and post-war period.
