The necessity of questioning authority was an integral part of the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century, a revolution which demanded a new kind of exploration of the natural world on its own terms and not on those of ancient philosophical and medieval religious traditions. The birth of modern science is inextricably linked with the evolution and direction of modern political philosophy, namely the development of the concept that political resistance is a legitimate act. Francis Bacon advocated questioning authority, just as he advocated the creative exploration of nature for the improvement of the human condition. These drives would serve as cornerstones of the modern scientific method. The relationship between these early conceptualizations of science and the underlying political message is understudied and undervalued, where it is not ignored altogether. This work seeks to uncover and delineate this relationship.Subjects--Topical Terms:
