Thesis (M.S.W.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2004.
The purpose of this study was to explore the well-being of oncology social workers and examine how they cope with multiple losses. A qualitative method was utilized; open-ended interviews were conducted with 15 oncology social workers. This study revealed that oncology social workers were impacted, both negatively and positively, by the multiple deaths of their clients. The workers appeared to be dedicated to their clients and the issues that were related to working with oncology patients to provide optimal care. A majority of the oncology social workers utilized positive coping mechanisms, for example, the support of family, friends, and their spirituality. The findings suggest the need for further research on this topic and for educational workshops to be made available to social workers on topics such as compassion fatigue and vicarious traumatization.
