To study whether the specific stage of life affects selenium status, females were investigated at different stages of life: early puberty, the menstrual cycle and postmenopause. Selenium concentrations and glutathione peroxidase activities in plasma/serum and red blood cells, and dietary selenium intake were measured.

To study selenium status and intakes prior to menarche, 40 early pubertal girls were investigated. To examine the relationship between fluctuations in estrogen and selenium status during the menstrual cycle, selenium status and estrogen levels were measured in 14 young women at four time points during one menstrual cycle: early follicular phase (EF: day 1--3 of menses), periovulatory phase (PO:estrogen peak) and mid luteal phase (ML:7--9 day after estrogen peak). The estrogen peak was determined by testing urinary luteinizing hormone (LH). To study the effect of menopause on selenium status, serum estrogen and selenium parameters were measured in 10 healthy postmenopausal compared with those of 13 premenopausal women. Blood samples from premenopausal women were collected during the EF phase.

Early pubertal females consumed adequate dietary selenium, which was reflected in optimal plasma and RBC selenium concentrations which correlated with body mass index and weight. During the menstrual cycle measurements of selenium status, except RBC selenium, showed cyclic changes similar to the fluctuation in estrogen levels which were highest during the PO phase, and lowest during the EF phase. Dietary selenium intakes did not vary throughout the menstrual cycle. Postmenopausal women maintained an optimum selenium status and adequate selenium intake which were comparable to that of premenopausal women. GPx activity in postmenopausal women, however, was greater than that of premenopausal women.

In conclusion, females at all stages in life cycle had adequate intakes and status of selenium. During the menstrual cycle, selenium measurements, except RBC selenium fluctuated coinciding with cyclic changes in estrogen concentration and this fluctuation was independent of dietary selenium intakes. GPx activity in postmenopausal women was elevated compared to that of premenopausal women with similar levels of estrogen and dietary selenium intakes, suggesting that age- related changes in oxidative stress might increase GPx activity.
