The Horner Nature Preserve is a natural wildlife area that contains the confluence of the South Fork of Harrods Creek and two of its tributaries, Standing Stone Branch and an as of yet unnamed tributary. The three streams all have headwaters outside of the sanctuary and all have contrasting composition of landuses in their watersheds. These landuses were summarized and compared with geo-chemical run-off into the streams after spate events. Further attempts were made in an effort to determine how changes in the watershed, in the form of increasing urbanization, affected the benthic fauna of the streams.

520 $a All of the streams were found to contain chemicals associated with agricultural and urbanized watersheds. The Standing Stone Branch, which contains large amounts of agricultural landuse, was found to be higher in nitrates but had higher biodiversity. The South Fork of Harrods Creek and the unnamed tributary, two rapidly urbanizing watersheds, both contained high amounts of phosphorous and were found to have lower biotic health as measured with the Kentucky measure of biotic indices. Consequently, both of these watersheds contain stream-side waste water treatment plants (WWTPs). These WWTPs, in addition to as increase of urban landscape, seem to be the primary factors for the relatively poor biotic health of these streams when compared to neighboring Standing Stone Branch.
