Body piercing is a flourishing risk-taking behavior. This descriptive study investigated attitudes of nurses (n = 95) and nursing students (n = 93) towards patients with body piercings using the Theory of Reasoned Action. The Healthcare Piercing Attitude Survey queried nurses from operating room, intensive care and emergency departments; student nurses were from a baccalaureate School of Nursing. While generations of respondents were significantly different in the nurse and student nurse sample, no significant differences were noted in their acceptance or disapproval of individuals with body piercings regarding gender, nursing specialty, educational level, work environment, or number of patients seen with body piercings. Nurses and students attitudes were most favorable towards individuals with 1--3 piercings whereas attitudes towards adolescents and individuals with 7+ piercings were the least favorable. This study recommends that healthcare providers be cognizant of their attitudes towards individuals with body piercings to ensure un-compromised patient care.
