Engineering (modernist) experiences problems with (un)modern design problems. Usually assuming the problem as a non-engineering issue, engineering designers turn to other interdisciplinary designers for answers, hoping that the other disciplines can provide small modules to slot into our bigger solution. The effort inevitably fails, and <miscommunication> is to blame....

This thesis is different. With John Law and others, I will argue that there is no need to merge disciplines to create shared languages; instead, I argue the only necessary link between the competing disciplines is the yet-to-be-designed object itself. Using a pair of examples that show multiple narratives about an object from multiple viewpoints, we will find if this <crossdisciplinary design> theory is valid---can we weave an understandable whole out of disparate narratives in the interstice between adjacent disciplines?*
