Six African American women holding supervisory positions in education and the private sector were interviewed using a series of eleven open-ended questions. Transcribed interviews were analyzed using open coding and content analysis. The findings did not support interactive effects of race, gender, and class as an impediment to participants' pursuit of upward mobility. All six participants cited gender as the major obstacle to their progress. In addition, two additional barriers emerged: isolation and intraracial discrimination. The narratives revealed that life events of the participants triggered transformational learning resulting in perspective transformation, an essential factor in upward mobility.
