Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of South Carolina, 2003.
In the present study, school psychologists provided responses to a paper-and-pencil survey and phone interview about their perceptions of the disproportionate representation of African American students in special education. They described their perceptions of the causes and solutions for overrepresentation on ratings and open-ended questions. Respondents' previous training in multicultural issues was assessed using an original scale based on recommendations for school psychological practice with racially and culturally diverse students (Rogers, et al., 1998). An important goal of the study was to generate solutions for improving the academic outcome of African American students identified as having mild disabilities. Another important goal was to investigate the association between self-perceptions of multicultural competence and beliefs about causes and solutions. Data from this study appear to be useful for understanding the potential impact of multicultural competence on school psychological practice. It has also helped to identify target areas that school psychologists could better address today in order to improve academic outcome for African American students tomorrow.
