The famous Ospedale degli Innocenti, one of Florence's most beautiful buildings, began in the fifteenth century as a religious and charitable institution committed to the care of children. Centuries earlier, virtually every large Italian city had some variation of this type of institution, with most originating as hospitals that ministered to the sick and impoverished, in addition to taking in orphans. Later, during the Renaissance, the ospedali became overwhelmingly the repository of unwanted children, functioning much like modern orphanages while retaining characteristics of both convents and hospitals.

The famous Ospedale degli Innocenti, one of Florence's most beautiful buildings, began in the fifteenth century as a religious and charitable institution committed to the care of children. As foundling homes, the ospedali were responsible for both the physical and spiritual development of the children; hence education was a primary obligation. In addition to the basics of grammar, arithmetic, and such practical skills as weaving, music was also taught. Although by the sixteenth century Florence's Innocenti became the primary caritative institution of the city steeped in music, its famous foundling home never developed into a conservatory as did those of the widely studied Venice and Naples. The lack of musicological research on Florence's foundling home might suggest that there simply was no musical activity there to study, but the reasons are far more complex.

This dissertation examines historical, social, and religious conditions that influenced the musical activities of Florence's Innocenti, factors which caused it to develop along lines distinctly different from those of the foundling homes of Venice and Naples. The archival sources of the Ospedale degli Innocenti reveal sufficient information to indicate that there was musical activity there, but these references are diffuse, lacking the organization to suggest anything sufficiently structured to be considered a curriculum of musical instruction. To illuminate the possible reasons for this difference, this study relies heavily upon ancillary archival records of other institutions in the broader context of civic activities, both secular and religious.

It is possible to identify two main currents that influenced the character of musical activity at the Innocenti: the State and Religion, personified in the Medici and Savonarola. This dissertation demonstrates how the musical activities of the children at the Innocenti reflect both the vicissitudes of the Medici family---its fortunes and its reversals---as well as how it responded to the religious influences, both the extremes of the zealot, Savonarola, and the edicts of the Council of Trent. Also revealed in this dissertation is the establishment of the Franciosini, a select musical ensemble comprised of musicians from the Innocenti, founded during a period of Medici resurgence. This unique group of musicians was called upon regularly to participate in the lavish spectacles staged by the Medici, and several of its members became prominent composers. This study conclusively shows the attributes of the musicians from the Innocenti to be many, their countless performances indicative of their significance in the annals of music history.
