This dissertation analyzes the relationship between literature, philosophy, science and technology in contemporary Italian literature using, as a principal point of reference, the work of Italo Calvino, one of the most influential 20th century Italian writers. In particular, it examines the theoretical and literary perspectives elaborated by Calvino in his critical essays embedded in the concept of "literature as natural philosophy."

This concept provides the basis for an understanding of a complex intellectual and artistic genealogy to Italian literature which is unique in European cultural history, signalling a cognitive vocation handed down from Dante all the way up to contemporary authors such as Calvino himself or Primo Levi. Calvino characterizes the idea of "literature as natural philosophy" as follows: "the notion of the literary work as a map of the world and of the knowable, of writing driven on by a thirst for knowledge that may by turns be theological, speculative, magical, encyclopaedic, or may be concerned with natural philosophy or with transfiguring, visionary observation."

Calvino charts a literary trajectory which encompasses major Italian figures such as Ariosto, Leonardo, Machiavelli, Leopardi. At its core is the intellectual figure of Galileo Galilei, in his role both as refined literary author, and as the rigorous scientist who had the "visionary" capacity of proposing a new cosmology and an alternative form of "natural philosophy." Galileo's work also offers a paradigm for the constructive gnoseological character of experimentation, both in technical and in aesthetic senses.

This framework will be used to trace the persistence of this vocation in twentieth-century Italian literature, examining the works of authors such as Carlo Emilio Gadda, Primo Levi, and Leonardo Sinisgalli as cases in point. For these authors literature is seen as an aesthetic tool with explicit gnoseological and cognitive capacities. Moreover they share a common epistemological understanding of reality, based on an anti-idealistic constitution of human mind, and a combinatorial and atomistic understanding of the universe---as described by authors and philosophers such as Lucretius and Leibniz. A thorough discussion of the relationship of this writers with the philosophical and practical implication of the expansion of technology will be also brought to the fore in the discussion.
