National statistics indicate a decrease in physical activity and an increase in asthma, both leading to morbidity and mortality. Recent research has found that regular physical activity is linked to enhanced health and reduced risk for mortality of chronic diseases. Asthma is a common chronic disease affecting millions of Americans. However, little research is available on the status of physical activity among the adult asthmatic population. This investigation attempted to fill in the knowledge gap by examining the physical activity status of adult asthmatics in the state of Connecticut, based on the demographic variables of gender, age, race, and ethnicity. A non-experimental, cross-sectional design was used for this study. The 2001 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Questionnaire (BRFSS) was utilized in order to conduct a secondary analysis. This study examined the physical activity status of adult asthmatics in Connecticut, according to age, gender, race, and ethnicity. The results of this study showed that the majority of adult asthmatics participate in physical activity or exercise. The physical activity and exercise status of adult asthmatics in CT varied according to the demographic variables of gender, race/ethnicity, and age. Results indicated that asthmatic males, multi-racial asthmatics, and asthmatics in the 18--24 age group are more likely to engage in physical activity or exercise. These findings may promote further interest to study physical activity as related to the adult asthmatic population's health needs. Future research requires emphasis on cross-analyzing demographic variables, as well as examining demographic trends utilizing previous BRFSS.
