Thesis (Ph.D.)--Temple University, 2004.
This dissertation is the first full-length study of the contemporary Japanese artist, Mariko Mori. The artist uniquely combines photography, performance, video, installation, and digital art to produce cutting-edge works of art that confront age-old, traditional themes through present and futuristic technologies. Mori's work consists of a complex nexus comprised of eastern religion, mythology, science and technology, nature, and the self that combines to form the artistic foundation for her passionate quest to attain enlightenment in the contemporary age. This project makes two specific contributions to art historical scholarship. Since no monograph exists on Mariko Mori, this study provides the first thorough analysis of her artistic career within the context of recent art practice and the artist's biography. In addition to supplying the first monograph on Mariko Mori, this dissertation attempts to integrate new media studies into traditional art historical methodologies to expand the understanding of contemporary works of art that incorporate recent technologies in fine art contexts. This is accomplished through varying discussions of Mori's work, in chronological order, that rely on cultural, philosophical, scientific, religious, and social information for interpretation.
